tectonic hazards Flashcards
(13 cards)
destructive plate margin
plates move together if one plate is oceanic it sinks below the continental plate this can cause earth quakes and volcanoes if both are continentail form fold mountains
constructive plate margin
plates move apart magma rises to the surface between the plates this creates volcanoes and mild earth quakes
contructive plate margin
plates move past each other friction causes earthquakes but no volcanoes as there is no magama
what are the types of hazards
tectonic :caused by plate movement e.g earthquakes and volcanoes
atospheric: liked to weather and climate eg tropical storms
factors that might affect hazard risk
wealth : LICs are often more severly affected than HICs
population density : there are more people at risk in urban areas
physical environmental: relief ,proximity to coast climate etc
monitoring
physical changes to help forecast tectonic hazards e.g monitoring earth tremors around volcanoes
protection
actions taken before a hazards to reduce its effects e.g building earthquake proof buildings
prediction
attempt to forecast when a hazard will strike
e.g monitoring used to make predictions earthquakes are almost impossible to predict but patterns of past events are considered
planing
actions taken to enable comunites to respond to and recover from natural hazards e.g evacuation plans emergency supplied stores
primary effect
inital impact on people and property caused directly by a hazard
secondary effect
after effects that occur indirectly
immediate response
action taken after a hazard has happend
long term response
later reactions weeks months or years later
