Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
(21 cards)
What plate boundary do Composite volcanoes form on
Convergent
What plate boundary do Shield volcanoes form on
Divergent and Hotspots
What is the greenhouse effect?
The way particles of gas (methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapour) trap heat/solar radiation from the sun in the atmosphere.
What is climate change?
A sustained change in the average temperature of earth over years.
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
When human activities result in a large increase of the production of greenhouse gasses
What is volcanism?
It is when some volcanoes produce so much volcanic material is partially blocks out the solar radiation.
What are the Milankovic cycles?
It is the natural changes to the Earth’s orbit and position affecting how much solar radiation we receive.
Where are earthquakes formed?
They are formed at plate boundaries.
What type of pressure system is a tropical storm?
Low pressure weather system.
Tropical storms form when water is at what minimum temperature?
27⁰C
When does a tropical storm begin to lose energy?
When it reaches land.
How will climate change impact tropical storms?
It will make them more powerful/intense.
What can help track and predict tropical storms?
Satellite images.
What force causes tropical storms to spin?
The Coriolis affect.
What are the weather conditions at the eye like?
Calm and clear.
What are natural causes of climate change?
Orbital change/Milankavic cycles, Volcanism,
What can be used to measure the climate in the past?
Ice cores, Tree rings, Historical evidence e.g diaries, painting.
Are warm currents at the top or bottom?
Warm currents are at the top, cold currents are at the bottom.
What do the ocean currents redistribute?
Heat energy.
Where do warm currents transport warm water?
Polewards, away from the equator. When they reach the poles, they cool and sink, because they become heavier and denser.;
Where do cold currents transport cold water?
To the equator, they eventually warm, becoming less dense and then rising again.
