tectonics Flashcards
(11 cards)
what are the players of local and national gov
1)Emergency services (fire, police, ambulance)
2)Local planning and building regulations (making sure buildings are safe)
3)Educating the community about risks and preparation
1)Setting national policies on disaster management
2)Funding large-scale emergency responses and infrastructure
3)Coordinating between local governments and international aid
4)Investing in monitoring and early warning systems
what does the par model suggest
- root cause
- dynmaic pressure
3.unsafe conditions
important in addressing the root cause to reduce vulnerability.
what does the par model suggest in terms of vul
states disasters pontially occur due to the presence of a vulnerable population.
what ways can earthquakes and volcanoes be meaured by
- MMS- measures enegry realsed by shockwaves
- Mercali-measures experienced impacts of earthquakes
- VEI-measures the explosiveness of a volcano(magnitude)- 1-10
- richter scale- measurement of the height of the wave produced by an earthquake.
what briefly happened in the 2004 boxing day tsunami
300k people killed
slow recovery
why is philippines a multi hazard zone
50 active volcanoes 25 are active
lies in the pacific ring of fire
affected by 15 typhoons
one earthqauke 1976-6000 people died whilst sleeping
what are the roles of scientists
moniters volcanic activity- uses seismic monitering and satellites eg done in japan as they have access to high technology
what does the parks model suggest
shows how countries may respond after a hazard event
all hazard are different so curves will be different.
what are the role of planners and engineers
to reduce the impact of hazards- by planners selecting the correct strategies
what are the role of ngos
NGOs are important when local government is struggling. Helps provide funds, development, reconstruction, coordination, search and rescue. E.g. Haiti got help from Red Cross and Oxfam.
what are the roles of insurers
Insurers can help recover communities and provide people’s businesses with money. However, it can only happen in some countries, mainly developed.
