If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Two simple checks can be made: gentle pressure on the steering wheel while starting the engine should result in slight movement, or turning the steering wheel just after moving off will indicate that power assistance is functioning.

Operate the switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary) and check the warning light is on.
Use only when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. Only use in dense fog or heavy rain.

Operate the switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary) and check with the main beam warning light.

Identify the dipstick/oil level indicator and check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

Identify high and low level markings on the header tank or radiator filler cap and describe how to top up to the correct level.
How would you check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
Identify the reservoir and check the level against high and low markings.
