Temperature & Heat Flashcards

1
Q

What do mean when we refer to temperature?

A

When we talk of temperature it is referring to the amount of molecular motion within a mass, and is measured in (metric) degrees Celsius. The imperial alternative is Fahrenheit.

Q

What is heat measured in?

A

Heat is measured in calories, which is the amount of heat required to raise one gram of water one degree Celsius and is the total kinetic energy of the molecules within a mass.

Q

What is the difference between heat and temperature?

A

The difference between heat and temperature can be compared with water and air. Another way to view this is to imagine two pots with water at 100°c, pot #1 has one litre and pot #2 has two litres; they both are the same temperature but pot #2 contains twice as much heat.
