Q

temporal embodiment

A

the knowledge that. your age is important but not why or how it will be defined - relevant to the Pro Marcello, given his fixation on the way forward, and in Eclogues because of the fixation on the past (as well as the evolution of the pastoral landscape)

Q

temporal alienation and generic fluctuation in the eclogues

A

E3: theocratian song contest
E4: epic content but in hexameter like all the rest - given the prophetic nature of this passage, is all of it quasi-prophetic?

eclogues 4 prophesies a future which has already come to pass (in it’s augustan interpretation) - creates almost a temporal indifference / suspension of time

contrast of oracular vernacular with verbs of returning (‘redit’ and ‘redeunt’)

reference to hesiodic races of men in the prophesy has similar effect - the prophesied hero is ‘permixtos heroas’ -> if octavian is a hero then shouldn’t we be just after the golden age, temporal contradictions -> progress is cyclical

reference to another achilles - but the aeneid context doesn’t exist yet - metatextual temporal rearrangement (ironic)
