The perfect tense
Past tense
What is the perfect tense?
The perfect tense is used to describe events in the past. The perfect tense of regular verbs is formed using the present tense of “haben” and a past participle which comes at the end of the phrase. E.g; GEmachT
Verbs with irregular past participles in the perfect tense
Some verbs have irregular past participles and you have to learn these:
Essen- gegessen (eat,ate), trinken-getrunken (drink, drank), schlafen-geschlafen (sleep, be asleep), treffen-getroffen(meet,met), trinken-getrunken(drink,drank), lesen,gelesen(read-read), sehen-gesehen(watch,watched/See,saw)
Perfect tense with “sein”
Some verbs from the perfect tense with “sein” instead of “haben”. You have to learn which ones these are,but they are often to do with movement.
“sein” + gefahren(went/travelled), geblieben(stayed), gegangen(went (on foot)), geschwommen(swam), geflogen(flew), gelaufen(walked, ran)
