Internal vs. External
Internal: civil war
External: world war
Ideological Conflict
- Rights & freedoms: deprive citizens of rights
- Identity & Political autonomy (geopolitical): conflicts over language, religion, ethnicity of territory

Armed conflict
a conflict in which each side uses forces to achieve its goals
Hard power
use of military or economic power on other countries (e.g. armed conflict, terrrorism, economic sanctions)
Soft power
Involve less human and financial cost than hard power (e.g. co-option, public diplomacy, government diplomacy)
Asymmetric warfare
The weaker side fights with whatever weapons are at hand often car bombs, suicide bombers, and TEDs.
Peacebuilding
Long-term process for prevention of conflict that promotes the development of stability within nation

Reduction in military spending
Opportunity cost
Money that is spent to create one good or services cannot be spent on another (so the costs and benefits need to be weighed)
