What was the Chateau Clique
A group of British businessmen on the Executive Council who wanted more British people to settle in Lower Canada so there would be an English majority. Also wanted to abolish French civil law & seigneurial system

Tried to unite Upper and Lower Canada - led to French Canadians mobilising opposition so they dropped it. Increased the mistrust of British people.

Irish - stereotyped as criminal and diseased. Cholera outbreak in 1832 increased tensions and stereotypes. 2 men shot in 1832 election (shows tensions increased)

Lord Gosford led a royal inquiry into problems in Lower Canada. Sir Head disclosed to Upper Canada in January 1836 that the UK had no intention of implementing the change the patriotes wanted.

The 20 Russell Resolutions, which rejected the 92 resolutions from Papineau and said the Lower Canada owed Britain £142,000
What was the outcome of the Gosford Mission
The patriotes called for a boycott of British goods, so Gosford increased military presence and banned public meetings

Patriotes felt they had no legal means of reform, so had to make it a war
