Term 1 - Aims, Hypothesis etc Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an aim?
What you want the study’s results to show
What is a hypothesis?
A testable statement
Whats is an alternative/experimental hypothesis?
A hypothesis when there is a relationship between 2 variables
When do you use the term alternative hypothesis?
In a non experimental method
E.g. of experimental hypothesis (non-directional)
The consumption of alcohol will affect performance on a reaction time test
Whats the difference between a directional and non-directional hypothesis?
A directional hypothesis specifies the direction of the result e.g. higher, lower, increase, decrease etc
E.g. of directional hypothesis
The consumption of alcohol will negatively affect performance on a reaction time test
What is a null hypothesis?
A hypothesis when there is no relationship between variables
E.g. of null hypothesis
The consumption of alcohol will have no affect on a reaction time test.
What is an Independent Variable?
The variable that is controlled and manipulated by the experimenter
What is a Dependent Variable?
The variable that is measured
