What is population?
Means a group of living things of the same type living in an area like a city, country or earth.
What is the study of population called?
Demography
What is pop density?
The number of people per square km
What is a census?
It is a detailed survey of a population.
What are the most important facts that are needed in a census?
Total numbers of males and females and the age and sex of each individual.
Where do most refugees come from?
Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia
Name the five biggest effects on the population by forced removals
- African slave trade. The Slave trade from Africa to north and South America and the Caribbean carried tens of millions of Africans from their homes to the americas
- 19th century, thousands of convicts shipped from Brit to Australia π¦πΊ, where had huge impact on Australian pop
- 1980βs, war in Afghanistan sent as many as 6 million people across countries borders
- 1972, Ugandaβs dictator Idi Amin expelled 50000 Asians
- 1845, Ireland potato π₯ crop failed , over 1million people died of starvation and 1,6 emigrated 2 USA πΊπΈ where had a profound influence over politics and economics of the country.
How do you work out how fast the pop is growing in a country?
Look at migration, fertility and mortality
What is migration?
When people move with in and between countries
What is internal and external migration?
Internal- when people move from a rural area to a urban area for a job etc
External migration - is when people move from one country to a new country, this affects the size of the total pop.
What is the crude birth and death rate?
Crude birth- number of births during one year per 1 000 of the total pop.
Crude death π- number of deaths during one year per 1 000 of the total pop.
What is the specific birth rate and death rate?
Specific birth rate- number of births per the number of women in their childbearing years (15-44)
Specific death π rate- the specific death rate takes age and gender of the people who have died into account.
What is the fertility rate?
Is the average number of children a woman of childbearing age is expected to bear
What is the infant mortality rate?
Is the number of babies that die in their first year
What is child mortality rate?
Is the death of children between the ages from 0-4 years old
