Animal Skin vs. Pelt

Briefly describe the grain side of leather
This is the smooth, textured surface of leather that faces outward ( where the animals hair or fur was)
-each type of leather has a unique pattern on this side, that varies by animal type.
Briefly explain the grainside in leather
The grain side is the way the hide looks after processing.
- it has a textured appearance, somewhat wood grain but isn’t actually wood
Some brands may fake this Texture.
Describe the flesh side in leather
This is the inner side of the leather, which was originally connected to the animals body.
It is rougher compared to the grain side.
How many sides does leather have? List and briefly describe
Leather has two side: the backside of the leather known as the flesh side .this side of leather was originally connected to the animal, ot is usually rougher than the other side of leather.
The top side of the leather known as the grain side or hair side is on the opposite side to the flesh side.
Explain this statement ( The quality of the hide or skin, is to a large extent, related to the amount of damage to the grain or outside surface “)
The grain side is the top part of the leather, which fives it Texture and pattern…therefore, this statement means if the surface is damaged, the leather quality is reduced.
Give categorized challenges associated with down grading of skin and hide quality and give examples each
Natural defects
Examples
Cuts and scratches, bug bites and parasites, skins diseases
Man-made defects
Brand marks, ripping and flying, storage poor handling, preservation and transportation
Why does hide and skin quality matter?
It matters because high quality leather comes from undamaged hides, with smooth and intact grain, thus if the side has defects, it may need to be corrected ( sanded or treated), which lowers its value.
Define a flank
It is the fleshy part of the animals side, located between the ribs and the hip.
It is a soft, flexible area compared to bony parts of the animals body.

It is soft and flexible
Briefly describe the belly.
It refers to the underside of the animal’s body, including the stomach and abdomen.
- the belly skin is softer and looser compared to the rest of the hide.
- it is sometimes considered waste material in leather processing but can still be used for various purposes.
Briefly describe the butt
This is a section of the hide located below the shoulders.
- it is often vegetable- tanned, making it durable and strong.
- This part is thicker and more resistant, making it ideal for high - quality leather goods like saddles and belts
What is a hoof ?
This is a hard covering that protects the toes of certain animals, such as horses, cows, and goats
Why do animals need a strong insensitive surfaces like hoofs?
Because they have hoofs and walk on the tips of their toes and so they need a strong insensitive surface to support their weight.
