ALLEGORY
a story or a narrative, often told at some length, which has a deeper meaning below the surface
AMBIGUITY
use of language where the meaning is unclear or has two or more possible interpretations.
CATHARSIS
a purging of emotions such as takes place at the end of a tragedy
DIDACTIC
a term describing a work that is intended to preach or teach, often containing a particular moral or political point
EUPHEMISM
a word or phrase used to avoid saying an unpleasant or offensive word
LAMENT
a poem expressing intense grief
PARODY
a text that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect
PERIPHRASIS
a round-about or long-winded way of saying something
POLEMIC
a piece of writing or a speech in which a person strongly attacks or defends a particular opinion, person, idea or set of beliefs
SENSATIONALISM
when newspapers, television, etc. intentionally present information in
a way that is intended to be shocking or exciting
VERNACULAR
the native language a community uses for speech
VISUAL RHETORIC
a form of communication that uses images to create meaning or construct an argument
ELEGY
a meditative poem, usually sad and reflective in nature
analogy
Process of transferring traits from one thing or idea to another. Propaganda often uses false analogies to persuade an audience
“9/11 is our generation’s Pearl Harbour”
anaphora
Repetition of the same word or phrase in a succession of sentences. Used to establish rhetorical effect
denounement
Final unfolding of a plot in a literary work.
Paralanguage
ways of communicating that go along with speaking eg. facial expressions and body language
