Vectors
Real or imaginary lines that can be drawn around a picture.
Reading Path
The movement of the viewers gaze around a visual text .
Demand
When a figure gazes directly out if the page demanding a response.
Offer
When the picture offers the reader some information to do with the story.
Motif
A repeated idea/image.
Salient
Most important features in the text and pictures.
Hue
The use of colour to denote setting, theme / mood.
Scale
The size of objects in relation to each other.
Borders
Frames around illustrations.
Endpapers
The parts just inside the front and back covers.
Typeface
Type of lettering.
Gutters.
The space going into the binding.
Space
Where the picture / pictures are located on the page.
Saturation
The amount if colour used in the picture.
Lines
Used to suggest energy, direction, and mood. Can direct out reading path.
Motion
In visual text this is created by illusion.
Texture
Bumpy, glossy, shiny etc. Created with lines and colour.
Front matter
Source notes and author information.
Book jacket or Dust cover
The front and back if a book-may be different to the actual cover-may be wrap around.
Angle
The position the picture is viewed from.
Double page spread
When the picture goes across more than one page.
Shot
Pictures can be close up, long distance etc.
