Simile

A figure of speech that juxtaposes two opposite or apparently contradictory words
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory or nonsensical on the surface but that, upon closer examination, may express an underlying truth
Understatement
AKA Meiosis
A figure of speech that Characterizes something in a way that, taken literally, minimizes it’s evident significance or gravity
Liotes
A type of understatement/ meiosis that makes an affirmative point by negating it’s opposite
Hyperbole
A figure of speech involving deliberate, emphatic exaggeration, usually for comic or ironic effect
Allegory
The concrete presentation of an abstract idea, typically in a narrative, with at least two levels of meaning, first level is the surface story line. The second level, or deeper level of meaning, is typically moral, political, philosophical, or religious
Parody
A form of comedy that imitates a specific, generally serious work or the style of a particular author or gene
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of rhyme in a poem, typically described by assigning a lower case letter to each new rhyming sound
Stanza
A grouped set of lines in the poem, usually separately from other clusters by a blank line
Euphemism
The substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.
Euphony
Pleasing, harmonious sounds
Cacophony
Harsh, disorient sounds
Assonance
Repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds, usually in stressed syllabus, followed by a different consonant sounds in proximate words
Apostrophe
A direct and often emotional address to a person who is dead or absent, an imaginary or non-human entity, or a place or concept
Invocation
A type of apostrophe involving explicit request for aid
