Globalisation
The integration of the worlds economy and culture through the mass consumption of mainly western culture, technology and trade.
Transnational corporations (TNC’s)
Large companies that operate in a number of countries but generally have their head quarters in a country of the developed world
GDP
Gross domestic product refers to how much money is made by a country from product and trade.
HDI
Human development index measures the life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rates and educational standards of a country.
International trade
The movement of goods from one country to another.
Global village
A term used to describe how the world appears to be getting smaller through advances in technology.
Popular culture
Mainstream culture. Associated with forms of entertainment such as tv, sports, music, books, movies.
Development
A process of change that results in an improvement in the quality of life of a community.
Global commons
Resources that no individual country owns or has legal responsibility for. Eg. The oceans.
Quality of life
The way in which people live their daily lives, not just how poor or wealthy they are.
Franchise
Sell the rights to use the trading name, know how methods and procedures of an established business. Eg. Subway stores
Infrastructure
The facilities needed for the effective functioning of a community. Eg. Roads/transport, health care, education, water and power supplies and telephone and Internet services.
Cultural integration
Increasing Linkages and similarities between world cultures.
Standard of living
Economic overall well being of people. Those with greater wealth are assumed to have a higher standard of living than those with less money.
Culture
The way of life of a people, including their traditions, customs, languages and belief systems.
Sustainability
The wise use of natural resources so that people in the future can still use them.
What is a fossil fuel?
A fossil fuel is a resource which energy is produced through burning. They are non renewable eg. Coal, natural gas.
What are examples of the effects of globalisation
Being able to contact people over the Internet from far away, being able to travel to places all over the world, being able to ship clothes.
What is a positive of Globalisation
We can connect with others from far away, we can trade and buy things from different countries which can then be shipped over.
What is a negative of Globalisation
Countries money go overseas, cultures may be lost, TNC’s may underpay workers or overwork them in developing countries, local companies can be driven out of business by TNC’s
What is a developed country
High standard of living or hdi level
What is a developing country?
Country with an unsustainable standard of living or low hdi level
