Polycythaemia
Blood disorder involving an increase in red blood cells.
APGAR scores
Scale (0-10) of a newborn’s health. A score lower than 3 indicates a critical state of health .
Prosody
The rhythm, stress and intonation of speech
Velophayngeal competence
The effectiveness of the valve mechanism which separates the nasal and oral cavities.
Velopharyngeal inadequacy
Inability of the soft palate to separate the nasal and oral cavities during speech or swallowing.

Risk factors for infants
Prematurity
Maternal: alcohol, smoking, drugs, medication, anxiety
Otitis media
Middle ear infection
Apnoea of prematurity
Cessation of breathing by a premature infant lasting more than 15 seconds.
Upper respiratory tract infection
Infection involving the nose, sinuses, pharynx or larynx (eg laryngitis, otitis media, common cold).
Lower respiratory tract infection
Infection of the trachea, bronchi or lungs. Synonym for pneumonia and other conditions.
Garvage
Forced feeding (eg tube feeding)
Conductive hearing loss
Damage to outer or middle ear prevents sounds reaching the cochlear.
Sensorineural hearing loss
Sound reaches the cochlear but CN VIII does not transmit it to the brain.
