Irony

Words express something contrary to truth or someone says the opposite of what they really feel or mean.
When incongruity appears between expectations of something to happen and what actually happened instead.
Personal essay
An essay that incorporates the authors view without having to prove a point. It is based on ones opinion and emotion and not as formal.

Synesthesia
A sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another modality.
Ex: hearing a sounds includes visualization of a certain colour
Metaphor
Makes a comparison between two things that are unrelated but share common characteristics.
“My brother is the black sheep of the family”
Simile
Directly compares two things by using “like” and “as”
Ex: her smile is as bright as the sun
Symbol
Using an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning
Metonymy
One thing is replaces by a word closely related to it.
Ex: referring to the king as “the crown”
