A condensed summary of an article or essay.
Precis
A statement that has at least 2 different or conflicting meanings.
Ambiguity
A words literal meaning (dictionary)
Denotation
When a statement or situation means the opposite of what it appears to mean/or what is expected.
Irony
To put someone else’s ideas/words into your own words.
Paraphrase
A form of writing that holds human vice and folly up to scorn and ridicule (it sometimes employs exageration, ridicule and/or irony)
Satire
The linking of words or phrases
Transition
A figure of speech that claims one thing is another
Metaphor
Common, informal, and everyday language
Colloquial
Writing that is intended to inform or explain
Exposition
A trite (stale/commonplace) expression that was once colourful and original. Eg, “You’re as slow as molasses."
Cliche
A way of explaining complicated or unfamiliar concepts by comparing them to similar ones (comparing life to a race)
Analogy
A play on words that brings to the readers mind two different meanings (I couldn’t stand to be without my legs.)
Pun
The selection and arangement of words in a piece of writing
Diction
The main idea or point that the writer is trying to convey to the reader
Thesis
The emotional inflection of a word
Connotation
A reference to something - person, place, a concept, or quotation - from literature, politics etc
Allusion
A reference to a character, situation, or an idea that is generalized (usually unfairly so) and conventional.
Stereotype
The distinctive way a person writes.
Style
The art of using language effectively.
Rhetoric
A little story - an account of an incident - that is used to catch the readers interest or illustrate a point
Anecdote
A writers attitude towards a subject and or audience
Tone
Similarity for of grammatical structure. It creates symmetry for the reader.
