Syntax
the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.
Declarative sentence
a type of sentence in the form of a statement
Interrogative sentence
a type of sentence in the form of a question
Imperative sentence
a type of sentence in the form of a command
Exclamatory sentence
a type of sentence emphatically expressing emotion
Deliberative Questions
e.g. “What should I/you /we do?”
Lexis
the words in a language
Lexical or Semantic Field
Lexical field is the way of organizing related words and expressions into a system which shows their relationship to one another. For example, father, mother, uncle, and aunt,… belong to one lexical field. E.g “The lexical field of animals created through the verbs “roaring, biting and snuffling” enhanced the……”
Compound noun
made by joining whole words together, rather than parts of words. E.g.postman, website

Synthetic Personalisation
artificially constructs the sense that the text is addressing individual readers.
Synthetic Sisterhood
the ‘false friendship’ created in magazines aimed at females
Portmanteau
a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, for example motel or brunch.
Neologism
a new word
Adjacency
when the word is next to its visual representation e.g. the word ‘Muscles’ is next to the physical representation in the abs of the model.
Paralanguage/Pragmatics
the non-lexical component of communication by speech, for example intonation, pitch and speed of speaking, hesitation noises, gesture, and facial expression.
Elision
the omission of a sound or syllable when speaking (as in I’m, let’s ). Or Max for Maximum
typography
the ‘look’ of the text – font style, size, colour
Grapho-semantics
connotations for pictures e.g. a snowflake = cold
Triadic structure
pattern of 3, rule of three
Synecdoche
a part used to represent the whole, e.g. ‘the eyes’ to represent the audience
Metonymy
when one whole thing (not a part) represents something closely associated with it; for example, ‘ the crown’ representing the king
Interjection
n interjection is a word or expression that occurs as an utterance on its own and expresses a spontaneous feeling or reaction. E.g. Wow! Cool! Sh!! Awesome! Yuck!
