Antagonist
Character that is AGAINST the protagonist, and introduces conflict.
Allusion
Refencnce to work of lit to a person, place, or event in other lit or in history, art or music.
Purpose: make a point via reference.
Characterization
Personality character displays + how other reveals the personality.
Climax
Point of GREATEST emotional INTENSITY interest, or suspend in narrative.
Couplet
Two consecutive lines in poetry that rhyme.
Diction
Writers choice of words for clarity, effectiveness, and precision.
Dramatic Irony
Contrast between what the audience perceives and what character doesn’t know.

Figurative Language
Language that is not intended to be interpreted in a literal sense. OPPOSITE CHARACTER
Foil
A character who sets off another character by contrast.
Foreshadowing
The use of hints or clues in a narrative to suggest what action is to come.
Imagery
Use of language that appeals to any sense (SIGHT, HEARING,TASTE, TOUCH, OR SMELL) or any combination of senses.
Metaphor
Comparison between two unlike things w/ intent of giving added meaning to 1 of them.
Motivation
Reson that partially explains why a character thinks, feels, acts, or behaves a certain way.
Pun
HUMOROUS use of word or phrase suggesting 2 or more meanings at the same time.
Repetition
The return of a word, phase, stanza from, or effect in any form of lit
Rhyme Scheme
Pattern of sound that is marked by giving sounds a letter value. (Weird lined song thing)
Prologue
Long uninterrupted speech presented in from of other characters.
Oxymoron
A figure of speech that combines apparently contradictory term like “sweet sorrow” WORDS TOGETHER DON’T MAKE SENSE.
Personification
Figure of speech in which an animal, object, natural force, or idea is given a personality and described as human.
Simile
Comparison made between two dissimilar thing through use of specific word of comparison such as like or as
Soliloquy
A speech in which characters is alone on stage and express through out loud.
Sonnet
Work of lit specific pertaining towards SHAKESPEARE. HAS 4 line units followed by concluding two line unit. Most common rhyme for the SHAKESPEAREAN
Suspense
Quality of lit work that makes reader or audience uncertain or tense about the outcome of events
