sequence
the basic visual storytelling unit. centered on a single location, time, event, or process. made up of wide, medium, close up, and various other types of shots
talking head
slang for on camera segment featuring an interviewee in a fixed medium close up shot speaking to an off camera interviewer

a film style in which the camera is observational and generally follows action that happens naturally
journey documentary
takes the audience to a place or introduces them to a culture they would never otherwise encounter.
process documentary
follows a singular project from beginning to end, such as the building of a massive bridge or setting up a regional music concert or health care program.
biography
explores the life and works of a single contemporary or historical personality or group.
beauty shots
landscape and other shots with striking aesthetic qualities. might be sunrises, sunsets, or moody golden light shots
cover
generally applied to interview subjects, these are sequences of everyday activity used to introduce the interviewee’s personality
fair use
copyright law provisions allowing unlicensed use of visuals
golden moments
startling, disproportionately powerful sequences that are fresh, revealing, and memorable.
orphan works
copyrighted film or photos whose owners are difficult to find
public domain
visual material or audio for which the copyright has expired
reflexivity
video or audio revealing the production process. mild reflexivity could be an interviewer’s voice asking a question or a portable light stand in the background, strong reflexivity could be an on-camera host or a character directly addressing the producer during sequences. self-directed reflexivity focuses the story on the documentary maker who becomes the chief protagonist in the story.
treatment
a written narrative of the visual sequence expected in the documentary
back end deals
payment to a collaborator that depends on money received room distribution deals
contract
a legally binding agreement setting out the details of the collaboration
non-profit pass through
a not for profit agency willing to sponsor your documentary to allow donors or grant givers a tax break for their support
spec
informal term for work done that expects a future payoff down the line
