Terms Semester 1 Flashcards
A charged atomic or molecular particle with a net positive charge.
Cation
A charged atomic or molecular particle with a net negative charge.
Anion
An element that occurs naturally as a molecule of two identical atoms
Diatomic element
A pure substance consisting of atoms of two or more elements bonded together in a fixed ratio.
Compound
The change of state directly from a solid to a vapor, bypassing the liquid state, at temperatures below the melting point of the substance.
Sublimation
A homogeneous mixture of two or more pure substances.
Solution
A temporary, testable explanation of a phenomenon that stimulates and guides further scientific investigation
Hypothesis
The curvature of a liquid in a container
Meniscus
A uniform mixture of particles of different substances that form a single phase
Homogeneous mixture
A non-uniform mixture that contains two or more distinct phases, usually of different kinds of matter
Heterogeneous mixture
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the element identity of the atom
Atomic number
Any atom of an element that has a different number of neutrons compared to other atoms of the same element
Isotopes
A whole number representing the sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass number
An electron in the highest or outermost energy level of a neutral atom.
Valence electron
