Nation
A shared sense of belonging together
Nation-State
Another name for a country; a country with borders and a government
Patriotic
Devotion or vigorous support to one’s country
Nationalism
- A strong patriotic feeling towards your nation
- A belief that the nation is part of your identity
- A belief that the well-being of the nation-state is of utmost importance
- A collective state of mind in which people believe their primary duty and loyalty is to their nation
Linguistic Nationalism
Nationalism based on people having a common form of communication
Geographic Nationalism
Mountains, oceans, and deserts are physical barriers that isolate people from one another
Cultural Nationalism
The unwritten ways of fitting in to a group of people based on shared traditions, beliefs, and values
Cultural Appropriation
The act of taking advantage or exploiting one’s culture
Religious Nationalism
People from different countries having a shared understanding of a system of beliefs and values
Spiritual Nationalism
The relationship with the natural world
Relationship to the Land
Resources, geography, landmarks, and spiritual connections to a particular land create a feeling of nationhood
Political Nationalism
When people share a desire to govern themselves without influence from other countries.
Ethnic Nationalism
When people share a common ethnic history throughout generations in terms of ethnic origin and birth
Civic Nationalism
When people share beliefs, values, and mutual respect for laws.
Collective Nationalism
A shared identity among a group of people who are united by common beliefs, values, and/or interests
Loyalty
A commitment to something you feel strongly about
Revolution
A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system
Absolutism
A system of government where a monarch has absolute power over all citizens and all matter
Isolated Power
No control for anyone but the monarchy
Feudalism
A system to create and maintain order where the protection for the peasants was provided in return for special rights, taxes, dues, and privileges paid by the peasants.
Mercantilism
An economic system that was strictly regulated and directed by the government, monarch, and his/her advisors
The Three Estates
At the period of the French Revolution, French society was divided into three estates:
* 1st: Clergy (Religious Leader)
* 2nd: Nobility (Landlords)
* 3rd: Everyone Else
