Multimodal

turn taking where one person says something and the other responds and often asks a question
Back-channeling
a response to show we are listening using minimal responses such as yeah

reference to something which relies on immediate context

can’t. won’t, isn’t (all contracted forms of ellision)
Filler words
words like erm when they are thinking of what to say

language particular to an individual

for the purpose of chatting
Hedge
using cautious language to uncertainty or to avoid offence (might be, a bit, maybe)
Paralinguistic features
Body language - shrugging, facial expressions
Prosodic features
volume, pitch, speed, emphasis
Tag questions
a question at the end of a statement to encourage participation
Repair
when false start happens or two people talk at once and turn taking is disrupted
Utterance
a sentence or unit of meeting in spoken word
Overlap
simultaneous talk (two at once)
Fade
when you don’t finish your utterance
Relinquish
give up your turn, usually due to interruption
