Test 1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Ground state
The lowest energy state of an atom
Electrostatic attraction
Force of attraction between a positively charged particle and a negatively charged one
ex: The attraction of paper to a charged scale
Monoatomic
Consisting of one atom
Nucleons
A particle that makes up the nucleus of an atom ie. protons and neutrons
Orbital
A region of space in which elements move, each orbital holds two electrons.
Core charge
The net charge of a nucleus, considering the completed shells of electrons to act as a shield
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond towards itself
First ionisation
The energy required to remove one electron from an atom of an element in the gas phase
Reactivity
The ease with which a chemical can undergo reactions
Atomic radius trends
Increases down, decreases left to right
Electronegativity & Ionisation energy trends
Increase left to right, decrease down
Metallic character
Increase from top right to bottom left diagonally
Non-Metallic character
Increase from bottom left to top right diagonally
Critical elements
An element that is in high demand and has a limited supply
Ex: Lithium, Germanium
Elements and compounds difference
Elements is a pure substance made up of only one atom whilst a compound is two or more.
