What is the goal of crisis intervention ?
The verbally or physically intervene in a situation to prevent it from becoming worse and to reduce the chance of a more negative outcome.
What is a crisis?
A reaction to an event that goes beyond the individuals ability to cope
4 stages of a person in crisis
- Hazardous event occurs
- Person is put off balance leaving person feeling vulnerable
- Person reaches a turning point where coping mechanism failing
- Person is able to put some distance between themselves and the situation and adapt
Three general models of crisis intervention
- Cognitive model
- Psychosocial transition model
- Equilibrium model
What is the equilibrium model?
Role is to restore equilibrium to a person in crisis which is out of
Balanced, done by security, corrections and police

Developed in response to the death of Robert Dziekanski death in BC during an arrest
The braid wood inquiry report stated that police need more training with mental illness

What is a conflict?
A situation where two sets of demands, goals, or motives are incompatible
What are the two types of conflict?
- Positive or constructive
