Test 1 Review Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is kinematic the study of?
The study of motion
Describe motion
A change in an objects position as measured by a particular observer
Describe distance
The total length of the path travelled by an object in motion
Describe direction
The line an object moves along from a particular starting point
Describe scalar and give an example
A quantity that has only magnitude. Distance is an example (50m)
Describe vector and give an example
A quantity that has magnitude and direction. Distance and displacement are examples. (50mW)
Describe position
The distance and direction of an object from a reference point
Describe displacement
The change in position of an object.
What is a vector scale diagram
A vector diagram is drawn to scale. The vectors have a beginning and an end. They are used to represent total displacement(and other things) visually.
Displacement can be calculated by using:
D= df+di
What are the three rules for sigfig zeroes?
1) all non series are significant
2) all zeroes between sigfigs are significant
3) all zeroes which are both to the right of the decimal point and to the right of all significant digits are themselves significant
Describe average speed
The total distance travelled divided by the total time taken to travel that distance
What is the formula for average speed?
V=d/t
What is the formula for average velocity
V=d/t
What does the slope of a position time graph give?
Gives the velocity of an object
When calculating average speed/velocity what needs to be changed with the given?
Minutes to seconds
Km to meters
What is acceleration?
A change in velocity
What does a velocity time graph describe?
The motion of an object. Uniform acceleration or velocity result in straight line graphs
What is the slope of a line in a velocity time graph
Average acceleration
What is instantaneous velocity?
The velocity of a specific instant in time where average velocity is over a period of time
How is instantaneous velocity found?
By the tangent on a curve on a position time graph
How can change in velocity be found?
By finding the area under acceleration time graphs
In an acceleration time graph what does uniform acceleration result in?
A horizontal line
What is the value of gravity?
9.8 m/s2- exponent
