Test 1 Term 1 2015 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the main sequence of a massive star
Red supergiant.
Supernova
Black hole or neutron star.
What is the main sequence of an average star ?
Red giant
Planetary nebula
White dwarf
Black dwarf
What determines wether a supernova becomes a black hole or neutron star ?
The amount of material left behind.
BLACK HOLE - large amount left behind( immense pressure causes it to shrink)
NEUTRON STAR - average amount left behind (very dense)
What is nuclear fusion ?
When gravitational forces causes materials to collapse and condense, the temp also increases.
What is radiation pressure ?
Nuclear fusion releases immense heat known as radiation pressure which causes the radius of a star to be balanced and stable.
What four forces control the accelerated expansion of the universe ?
- Electromagnetism
- Strong nuclear force
- Weak nuclear force
- Gravity
What is some evidence for the Big Bang ?
CMB - cosmic microwave background
This was detected by the BICEP project and supported the inflation model of the universe.
What are the different variables ?
Independent - changed by scientist to ensure a fair test
Dependent - is what will be measured; it’s what the investigator thinks will be affected during the experiment.
Controlled - the thing that is kept the same through the entire experiment.
What is the law of conservation of mass and energy ?
Mass - mass cant be created nor destroyed.
Energy - Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed.
What processes remove and add carbon to the atmosphere ?
THE CARBON CYCLE
What are causes and effects of climate change ?
Causes - carbon emission
Effects - biodiversity, sea levels rising
What are the steps of the scientific method ?
Ask a Question Do Background Research Construct a Hypothesis Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion Communicate Your Results
What is some evidence for the big bang ?
Red shift - redshift happens when light or other electromagnetic radiation from an object is increased in wavelength. All galaxies appear to be moving apart.
