Q

*** Explain how the projectile of the Cart 25mm MPSD-T Mk2 functions on impact and penetration of the target.

A
  • On striking the target the aluminium nose cap of the projectile is crushed.
  • Provided the velocity of impact and resistance of the target are sufficiently high, the energy generated by the rate of deformation of the cap will be sufficient to raise the incendiary composition to its ignition temperature. (500degC)
  • The heat and pressure generated within the projectile then cause the HE to detonate and fragment the steel body.
  • An inherent delay of approx. 0.3ms allows the strengthened projectile body to penetrate the skin of the target before detonating.

Q

*** Explain the HEAT-MP-T M830A1 and Fuze PIBD M774 from firing to impact?

A
  • On firing, a voltage is applied to the electric primer (M129), which in turn ignites the main charge propellant (JA-2), tracer element and CCC.
  • The gases generated by this combustion process propel the projectile down the gun barrel.
  • The silicon seal, at the rear of the sabot, provides obturation
  • Upon leaving gun barrel, aerodynamic forces cause sabot and obturator to separate
  • Setback allows the release mechanism in the M774 to release rotor from first safe position
  • Voltage generators activated on setback, charging the M774 firing capacitor and M74 proximity fuze capacitor
  • Deceleration on exiting the barrel allows rotor to move into armed position aligning the explosive train
  • Target sensed by M74, a firing signal is sent to the M774 fuze.
  • The M774’s firing capacitor provides the necessary energy to initiate M69 det.
  • M69 det initiates the fuze lead cup, initiates the booster cup, initiates the warhead.
  • A copper jet is formed by the detonation of the sub projectile’s warhead.
  • The copper jet, along with body shrapnel and blast, provide the capacity to defeat target.

Q

*** Operation of the 25mm APDS-T M791 from firing

A
  • Metal cup of the primer is distorted by action of weapons’ firing pin, compressing the primer composition between the primer cup and anvil resulting in the functioning of Primer, Percussion M115 Mod B which, in turn, initiates the Pellet, Ignition Booster.
  • The flame and hot gases, generated by the function of the primer and pellet, transmitted through the flash hole to propellant contained in cc.
  • The flame and hot gases ignite the Propellant WC886, the resulting propellant combustion produces hot expanding gases.
  • These gases ignite the tracer, generate sufficient pressure to separate the projectile from cc and accelerate projectile down the barrel.
  • The rifling of the barrel imparts centrifugal spin to the projectile.
  • On discharge from the barrel, setback & centrifugal forces and air pressure cause the sabot and base to discard.
  • The penetrator is spin stabilised and penetrates the target solely relying on the kinetic energy of the penetrator.
