What is Available Seat Kilometer
(i.e. cost per ASK) - operating cost to fly one aircraft seat one kilometer
What is yield?
average revenue received for carrying one passenger one kilometer
Load Factor calculation
Total Revenue Passenger kilometers divided by total aircraft seat kilometers
Revenue Passenger Kilometer (RPK)
This is used as a measure of passenger traffic
How do you calculate RPK
(# of revenue paying passengers) x (# of kilometers flown) =
Revenue Passenger Kilometers
Yield calculation
Revenue/RPK = Yield
What is available seat kilometer (ASK) used as
This is used as a measure of capacity available
Calculation on ASK
(#of seats) x (# of kilometers flown) = Available Seat Kilometers
Passenger Load Factor (PLF)
The measure of how well an airline is balancing the capacity it makes available with the traffic it is able to attract
What is freedom of the air
Set of commercial aviation rights granting a country’s airline the privilege to enter and land in another country’s airspace
What are the factors that contribute growth
- Rising disposable income
- Deregulation of aviation law;bilateral and open skies agreement
- Growing confidence in aviation as a safe mode of travel
- increased efficiency and competition reduced cost of travel
- globalization
What is the first freedom
Right to fly across a country’s territory without landing
Second freedom
Right to land for non traffic purpose (technical reasons)
Third freedom
Right to carry passengers or cargo from ones own country to another
Fourth freedom
Right to carry passengers or cargo from another country to ones own
Fifth freedom
Right to carry passenger from ones own country to a second country and from there to a third country
What is deregulation
The removal of government restrictions on the operations of a business
Positives and Negatives of deregulation
Positive- allows beneficial competition for the airline industry.
Negative- scheduled flights to smaller areas get taken away because airlines are competing for the popular routes
Who might oppose deregulation
- Residents living in smaller areas might oppose because their scheduled flights might be cancelled.
- flag carriers or legacy carriers
What are the support businesses for the airline industry
- aircraft manufacturing
- aircraft maintenance
- aviation ramp services
- ground transportation
- fuel services
- customer service (hotel,car rental)
- freight forwarders (organize cargo shipping)
- specialized professionals (weather service)
What does ICAO do
Govern civil aviation
Establish international laws that deal with security crime
Sets international standards (navigational facilities, air operations..)
More on safety regulations
What does IATA do
Promote safe, regular, and economical air transport
Assign letter codes to airports and airlines
Deal with issue such as fares passengers and cargo agreements and debt settlement
What does IATA and ICAO have in common
Common objective to make air travel safer more efficient and economical
What are the two types of statements ICAO developed
