What is an Intellectual Disability
a disability characterized by:
- significant limitations in intellectual functioning
- limitations in behavior (conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills
- has to originate before the age of 18
Mild intellectual disability (MID)
IQ 50-55 to 70-75
Moderate intellectual disability (MOID)
IQ 35-40 to 50-55
Severe intellectual disability (SID)
IQ 20-25 to 25-40
Profound intellectual disability (PID)
IQ below 20-25
Intensities of support
intermittent
limited (consistant, but will eventually go away)
extensive
pervasive
intermittent (short term)
limited support needs, learning rate is 40% to 70% of those without intellectual disabilities
extensive
pervasive support needs; usually incapable of traditional schooling, need to master basic life skills and communication skills, sometime may cost something (i.e., long term education support, in home living, etc)

What causes Intellectual Disabilities (ID)
- x-linked disorders (chromosomes)
more than 750 genetic disorders associated with ID - many other non genetic possibilities (shaken baby, fetal alcohol, etc.)

4+ years behind peers on physical and motor tests
down syndrome (DS)
- most recognized
- 1 in 700 children are born with DS
- over 80 clinical characteristics and many physical characteristics
- increased risk of certain medical problems
- atlantoaxial instability and very flexible joints

flexibility of the vertebrae
- any contact / pressure to head can lead to it
- can lead to paralysis and dislocation of the vertebrae

let them choose within a range that you present (don’t say “what do you want to do?” say “do you want to play basketball or soccer?”)

to provide year-round sport training and athletic competition in olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It is also free of charge for families and athletes to ensure everyone can participate.
