Economic System

The governing system of the country, which can be based on dictatorship, inherited rights, elected procedures, consensus, or conquest.

May be formal, informal, or a combination of the two.
Marriage and Family Systems
Are made up of attitudes, beliefs, and practices related to marriage and the family that are held by people in a particular culture.
Nuclear Family
Father, Mother, and children.
Extended Family
Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Polygyny
One many with many wives.
Polyandry
One woman with many husbands.
Monogamy
One husband and a wife.
Serial Monogamy
A number of different monogamous marriages.
Patriarchal
Father oriented.
Matriarchal
Mother oriented.
Values
Social principles, goals, or standards accepted by persons in a culture.
U.S. Values
Are not shared by people in other cultures, we claim that all persons are equal and that no person is superior to another but is not, we are informal and tend to dress casual, we value time and directness, we do not place a great emphasis on history.
Semantics
The study of the meaning of words; it involves the way behavior is influenced by the use of words and nonverbal methods to communicate.
Attribution
The ability to look at social behavior from another culture’s view.
Perception
The learned meaning of sensory images, may involve learning a new reaction to an old learned stimulus.
Attitudes
Our likes (or affinities) and dislikes (or aversions) to certain people, objects, or situations.
Work Attitudes
How people of a culture view work.
Work
Mental or physical activities directed to socially productive accomplishments.
Work Ethic
Hard work is applauded and rewarded, although failure to work is viewed negatively and with disdain.
Ethical Universalism
Belief that certain values are universal across cultures regardless of race, gender, culture, and religion.
Ethical Relativism
Adopts the moral code of whatever country in which it is operating.
Ethical Standards
Are subject to change, even within a culture.
