Q

what are some examples of where scientists have discovered that everything psychological is simultaneously biological?

A

to think, feel, or act without a body would be like running without legs

Q

how are humans bio-psycho-social systems?

A

humans are bio-psyco-social systems because we are each a system composed of subsystems that are composed of smaller subsystems
-for example tiny cells make up organisims9stomach, heart, brain)—these organs form larger systems(digestion, information processing)—these systems make up us—we are a part of family, community, vulture

Q

how can behavior be studied from top to bottom and bottom to top?

A

top down:consider how thinking and emotions influence our brains and our health
bottom up:neurons up to the brain and the environmental and cultural influences that interact with our biology

Q
describe how neurons carry stimulus signals?
myelin sheath?
avction potential?
resting potential?
refractory period?
A

every neuron has a cell body and branching fibers–bushy dendrite fibers recieve information–sxon fibers pass the information to other neurons, muscles, or glanda

  • myelin sheath insyulates the axons and helps speed up the process
  • action potetial is the informatuon being sent through the axon
  • resting potential is the positive outside/negative inside state
  • refractory period is the neuron reseting itself in order to send more information (like a camera flash pausing to recharge)

Q

how is the neuron a miniature decision making device?

A

the neuron is a miniature decision making device because in performs complex actions, the neurons have to decide of the information will be like pushing the gas or if the information will be like hitting the brakes

Q

how do neurons help us determine the intensity of a stimulus?

A
  • increasing the stimulus will not increase the action potentials intensity.
  • the neurons reaction is all or non. like guns they either fire or they do not therefore we determine the instenity of a stimulus by how many neurons are fired

Q

what happens in an axon terminal?

A

the synaptic gap is the gap between the axon terminals of one neuron to a receiving neuron –when the action potential reaches the terminals it triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters—the neurotransmitters cross the synaptic gap sand bind the receptor sites to the receiving neuron
-excess neurotransmitters are reabsorbed by a sending neuron in a process called reuptake
