Ethical Dilemma

- homosexuality on school property
- making sexually explicit remarks (sexual-harassment)
- distribution of sexually explicit materials
- Obscene language
- possession of a controlled substance
- other criminal misconduct and dishonest activities
Insubordination
A persistent and or willful violation of a reasonable request by a authority figure
- Absence
- Abusive sickleave
- refusal to follow policy and an appropriate procedures
- Inappropriate use of corporal punishment
- refusing to meet with superiors
- encouraging students to reject or defy authority
- refusal to perform nonteaching duties

Abuse
Deliberate act of verbal and physical attacks with the intent to cause harm to individual or individuals
Neglect
Failure to meet a child’s basic needs ( including educational needs)
Suspected Abuse
Teachers are required to report it by law with the “reason to believe”
the most important way is documentation (leave a paper trail)
Causes of abuse
- Stress (such as job loss financial problems and unplanned pregnancy)
- frustrations or unmet goals
- alcohol and drug abuse
- abuse prone attitudes
- childhood experiences with family abuse
- mental and physical disorders
Understanding the victim
- Low self-esteem or shame
- ignorance or naïve usually related with sexual abuse
- fear
- reluctance for family and friends to intervene with the fear of getting it back to the parents

Signs to look for and behavioral clues
Signs to look for in abusive situations
- Wearing inappropriate clothing for the temperature
- wearing sunglasses indoors
- wearing heavy make up
- sudden personality changes or withdrawing
- serious injuries but Hidden by clothing
- Poor health (neglect)
- Excuses obvious injuries with flimsy excuses
- Sleeping difficulty
- Low self esteem
Behavioral Clues
- Insecurity
- Low self esteem
- Destructive behavior (toward living beings)
- Withdrawal
- Poor development of basic skills
- Alcohol/ drug abuse and or suicide attempts
