Test 2 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Competitive inhibition
binding of the inhibitor to the active site that prevents binding of the substrate
Uncompetitive inhibition
enzyme inhibitor binds only to the part between the enzyme & substrate
Irreversible inhibition
react with the enzyme and change it chemically
List the 6 classes of enzymes
Ligase Lyase Isomerase Hydrolase Oxidereductase Transferase
What is chymotrypsin
A protease that cuts at specific peptides
Acid-base catalysis
acceleration of a chemical reaction by the addition of an acid or a base
Entropy
thermodynamic quantity representing the unavailability of a system’s thermal energy
What are most hexoses in living things considered?
D-stereoisomers
Epimers
stereoisomers that differ at one chiral center
What are epimers NOT?
not mirror images because they are not enatiomers
What are two epimers of glucose
mannose and galactose
What is the ketose form of glucose?
fructose
Ketones attacked by alcohols form..
hemiketals
Aldehydes attacked by alcohols form…
hemiacetals
What sugars readily undergo intramolecular cyclization?
pentose
hexose
What is a anomeric carbon?
a former carbonyl carbon with a new chiral center
What greek letter is used for trans?
alpha
What greek letter is used for cis?
beta
