Know the definition for “grace”
the unmerited favor of God to those who have forfeited it and under a sentence of condemnation
Unconditional Election
God took the initiative in salvation
in eternity past He sovereignly and graciously chose certain ones to be saved
those He chose, the elect, will certainly be saved, those and no others
Conditional Election
man takes the initiative in salvation
in eternity past God graciously chose to save those whom He foreknew would respond in faith to the offer of the Gospel
Non-Personal Election
in eternity past God elected to save
He chose to provide a plan of salvation
He did not elect certain ones to save
Know the definition of a “decree”
His eternal purpose according to the counsel of His will whereby for His own glory, He hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass
Know the dual theological considerations for calling (salvation & vocation)
calling involves an invitation to salvation through Jesus Christ (connected to the concept of salvation)
calling requires a redirection of life for Jesus Christ (Connected to the concept of vocation)
Know the basic idea of death in the Scriptures (point “a” - middle of the page) is
separation and the two parts (a.) and (b.) that accompany it
physical death- separation of the soul/spirit from the body
spiritual death- separation of the soul-spirit from God
swoon theory
proposing that Jesus did not die on the cross, but merely fell unconscious
was later revived in the tomb in the same mortal body
theft theory
stolen body hypothesis
body of Jesus Christ was stolen from his burial place
tomb was found empty because the body had been hidden elsewhere by the apostles or unknown persons
vision hypothesis
theories that question the physical resurrection of Jesus and suggest that sightings of a risen Jesus were visionary experiences
wrong tomb theory
the disciples went to the wrong tomb in the confusion surrounding the trial and crucifixion
Know the definition of “atonement” and the two basic components (substitution
and satisfaction)
to provide a moral or legal repayment for a fault or injury
atonement involves satisfaction of the offended holiness of God
atonement involves an acceptable substitution for the guilty party
Ransom Theory
the death of Christ was a ransom sacrifice, usually said to have been paid to Satan, in some views paid to God the Father, in satisfaction for the bondage and debt on the souls of humanity as a result of inherited sin
Recapitulation Theory
Christ is seen as the new adam who succeeds where Adam failed
Christ undoes the wrong that Adam did and leads humanity on to eternal life
Know the definition for expiation
to free a guilty soul from the punishment due him for his sins and specifically to do so by means of a sacrifice

to buy out of slavery by payment of a price; to purchase; to secure release by payment of a ransom price

to placate or appease one whose wrath has been excited

to restore a place of fellowship by removing the offense which had destroyed that fellowship the removal of hostility and the restoration to peace, harmony, and favor
