test 2.9 Flashcards
(17 cards)
what are the applications of directional drilling
- Reaching Targets under inaccessible area
- Multilateral Wells
- Horizontal Wells
- Relief Wells
- Sidetracking
- Extended Reach Wells
- Salt Dome Wells
describe the terminology associated with horizontal drilling

describe a typical 2-D well trajectory

name 4 directional drilling tools
- whipstock
- jetting
- bent sub
- stabalizer
describe a whipstock

describe jetting

desribe bent sub

describe a stablizer

what are the two categories of down-hole motors

what are 3 ways to monitor directional drilling

what is inclination and azimuth
inclination - deviation from vertical
azimuth - deviation from horizontal
what 3 measurements can you use to calculate well trajectory
measured depth (MD)
inclination
azimuth
You can calculate Average angle, Radius of curvature, Tangental, and Minimum curvature from these measurements as well.
what is dead reckoning
Dead Reckoning: new position calculated from the previous one based on the distance drilled and measurements of inclination and azimuth.
what is a survey calculation
Obtain approximate coordinates of points along the trajectory starting from a known point on the surface
what is MWD
measurement while drilling - tells driller the position of the drill bit in 3D space
what is another name for geo-steering
LWD - logging while drilling
what is geo-steering
- different than MWD
- often ran on wireline
- measures formation properties while drilling to assess where drill bit is in the formation
- Construct geologic & tool response models from logs
- A well trajectory is proposed
- Measured log data (resistivity, density, sonic velocity, gamma ray) while drilling compared against prediction
