What is a coastal ecosystem?
A habitat for all sea animals, where land meets sea and can be damaged by a tsunami.
Example sentence: The coral reef is an important part of a coastal ecosystem.
What would cause damage to a coastal ecosystem?
A tsunami will do the most damage to a coastal ecosystem.
Additional information: Coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to natural disasters like tsunamis.
Levels of organization in the environment:
Organism > Population > Community > Ecosystem > Biosphere
Why are there short and tall trees in a forest?
There are different sized trees due to the amount of sunlight.
Example sentence: Tall trees in the forest can overshadow smaller plants.
What is a prairie ecosystem?
A prairie ecosystem is also called grasslands. Small to large animals live in the prairie. During a drought fire can severely damage the grasslands. There are very few earthquakes in the prairie.
What are natural disasters?
tsunami, fire, tornado, landslide, earthquake, flood, hurricane, blizzards, hailstorms, avalanches, droughts
What would cause a narrow path of destruction to a prairie ecosystem?
A tornado is what causes a narrow path of destruction to a prairie ecosystem?
If an ecosystem is located near a river, what natural disaster would cause it the most damage?
A flood would cause the most damage of a ecosystem near a river.
What is a tornado?
A tornado is a strong whirlwind that will create a narrow path of destruction through a forest and causes soil erosion and water pollution.
What are Biotic Factors?
Biotic Factors are living or once living organisms (octopus, worm, plant, snake)
What are abiotic factors?
Abiotic factors are non-living things.
List some abiotic factors that affect survival rate.
Water, sun, soil, air, minerals, temperature
Example: These factors can impact the growth and health of organisms.
Why are trees different heights in the forest?
The height of trees depends on the amount of sunlight they can absorb.
What are some effects of cutting down trees?
Loss of habitat for animals.
Define drought.
A drought is when a region is severely lacking rain for a very long period of time.
What happens to tadpoles in a pond during a drought?
They would be unable to survive.
If houses are built in a forest where rabbits live, what will happen to the rabbits?
The rabbits would die off because of the loss of their habitat and food.
What is ecological succession?
Ecological succession takes place when entire communities in an ecosystem change over time.
Define a unicellular organism.
A unicellular organism is a single-celled microorganism that needs a microscope to be seen.
Which cell type has DNA not in a nuclear membrane?
Prokaryotic cell
What is a prokaryotic cell missing?
A prokaryotic cell does not have a nucleus or have a membrane-bound nuclei.
Example: Bacteria are prokaryotic cells.
What are the differences between an animal and plant cell?
Plant cells have cell walls and chloroplast and animal cells do not have these two substances.
Example sentence: Plant cells use chloroplasts to photosynthesize.
What is considered a one-celled organism?
One-celled organisms include animal and plant cells, biomes, and bacteria.
Note: Biomes are not organisms but ecosystems.
