Test 3 Flashcards
(21 cards)
what is the bony thorax?
what does it consist of?
protects organs of the thorax & aids in respiration
thoracic vertebrae, sternum, ribs, & coastal cartilage
what is the pancreas?
what is its function?
long narrow retroperitoneal organ that lies posterior to the stomach and extends transversely between duodenum & splenic hilum
what is the order the oxygenated blood moves through the body?
deoxygenated blood travels to the right atrium from peripheral tissues (by inferior/superior VC)
right artium contracts, moving blood through tricuspid valve into right ventricle
right ventricle pumps the blood into the pulmonary arteries, which enter lung for oxygen exchange
pulmonary veins pass oxygenated blood into left atrium then to left ventricle
blood goes into the aorta and travels throughout body
how many chambers does the heart have?
4 chambers
right artium & left atrium
right ventricle & left ventricle
what is the superior portion of the lung called?
what is the inferior portion?
apex
base (costrophrenic angles)
what is the largest lymph organ in the body?
spleen
what are the parts of the sternum?
where are there locations?
manubrium (T1)
body (T3-T5)
xiphoid process (T9-T10) (inferior end)
what are the retroperitoneal structures that are located superiorly to the kidneys?
adrenal glands
how many quadrants are in the abdomen?
regions?
4 quadrants (RUQ, LUQ, RLQ, LLQ)
9 regions
what is the small intestine?
what makes up the small bowel?
located between pylorus & ileocecal valve (6-7 meters in length)
duodenum (proximal)
jejunum (left upper, middle portion makes up 2/5)
ileum (last portion of small bowel, makes up 3/5)
how many thoracic vertebrae are there?
what makes up the thoracic cage?
12 thoracic vertebrae
anterior (sternum) & posterior (T-spine) boundaries
what is the largest artery in the body?
aorta
(broken up into three parts: aorta, aortic arch, & descending aorta)
what is the anterior boundary of the thoracic cage?
posterior?
sternum (manubrium, body, xiphoid)
12 thoracic vertebrae
what is the urinary system made up of?
2 adrenal glands*
2 kidneys
2 ureters
1 bladder
1 urethra

sacrum, coccyx, & two hip bones
ilium (superior), ischium (posterior), & pubis (anterior)
what is the biliary system made up of?
what is it’s function?
gallbladder & bile ducts
drain the livers bile, gallbladder stores the bile until it’s transferred to the duodenum to aid in digestion
what is the duodenal flexure?
attachment?
held in place by the ligament of Treitz
what is the large intestine?
consists of?
inferior to stomach & liver, almost completely frames in the small intestine
ascending colon, hepatic flexure, transverse colon, splenic flexure, descending colon, & sigmoid colon
what is the true pelvis?
what is the false pelvis?
region below the brim is true pelvis
region above the brim is false pelvis
what is the abdominal aorta?
what are some of the arteries that break off from the aorta?
descends into the pelvis anterior to the lumbar vertebrae, slightly left of the midline
R & L common iliac arteries
R & L internal iliac arteries
obturator, umbilical, & inferior vesical arteries
femoral artery
