Contact Theory (Importance of Association)

Conflict Theory
How groups compete for scarce markets.
Ex. The Japanese won’t work, so hire the Koreans
-split labor market
-reserve labor force
Split labor market
Workers split along racial-ethnic, gender, age, or any other lines; this split is exploited by owners to weaken the bargaining power of workers (whites know other ethnic groups can take their jobs, blacks have latinos as competitors)
Reserve labor force
unemployed workers are thought of as being “in reserve” - capitalists take them out of reserve during times of high production and put them back into reserve when they are no longer needed
Symbolic Interactionism
How labels affect perception and create prejudice
- selective perception: seing certain features of an object or situation, but remaining blind to others
- self fulfilling stereotypes: embracing labels

Naturalization Act of 1790
Only white immigrants could apply for citizenship
