Test 3 Operations Management. Flashcards
(20 cards)
Operations Management DEF
All activities in which managers engage to produce goods or services.
Efficiency DEF
Refers to how well a business uses it resources to produce a good or service.
Effectiveness DEF
Refers to how successful a business has been in achieving it’s objectives.
Input DEF
Inputs are the resources used in the process of production.
Types of resources.
Natural resources: Includes raw
-Physical resources
-Human resources
-Financial resources
-Info from a variety of sources.
-Time
Transformation process DEF
The conversation of inputs into outputs.
Manufacturing business
-Generally use materials and capital resources.
-Turns inputs into tangible products.
Service businesses
-Generally makes use of more human resources and information.
-Transforms inputs into intangible products.
Outputs DEF
The end result of a business efforts - the service or product that is delivered or provided to the consumer.
Elements of Operations Management.
- Inputs
- Processes
- Outputs.
Automated production line DEF
Comprises machinery and equipment arranged in a sequence with components added to good as it proceeds through each step with the process controlled by a computer.
Robotics DEF
Highly specialized form of technology capable of complex tasks.
Disadvantages and advantages for robotics and automated
Advantages:
-Allows business to produce at a faster rate.
-Reduced need for human labor allows a business to produce at reduced costs and increase productivity.
-Minimizes waste.
Disadvantages:
-Robotics are costly
-Training is required so that employees are familiar with using robotics.
-Leads to loss of jobs
-Robots can break down.
Computer Aided design DEF
A computerized design tool that allows a business to create product possibilities from a series of input parameters.
Advantage and disadvantage of CAD
Advantage:
-Product designs can be produced at a faster rate without the need for erasing and redrawing.
-Designer can create 2D and 3D computerised version of the product.
Disadvantage:
-Computer software can crash, resulting in possible loss of work.
-Costs of software can be expensive.
Computer aided manufacturing techniques. DEF
The use of software to direct and control manufacturing processes.
Disadvantage and advantages of CAM
Advantage:
-Allows business to produce at a faster rates at a reduced cost.
-Allows a business to produce with greater consistently and greater accuracy.
Disadvantage:
-Computer software can crash resulting in production stopping.
-Cost and time involved in training staff can also deter many businesses from using CAM
-Job loss.
Material management DEF
The strategy that manages the use, storage and delivery of materials to ensure the right amount of inputs is available when required in operations system.
Aspects of material management.
-Forecasting
-Master production scheduling.
-Materials requirement planning.
