During the earlier part of the chase, Big Reddy kept ahead of the pack by using a wide variety of tricks, such as running through a maze of trails, running over rocks that held little scent, and running through a herd of cattle. Big Reddy finally fooled the dogs completely when he retreated to Coon Castle, the hollow tree that was home to Old Bandit, a large raccoon.
