Test for Anions Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
What is the test for carbonates?
A
- Add dilute HCL to test sample
- Take the gas that’s produced and run it through limewater
- If carbonates ARE present, the limewater will turn cloudy
(CO2 test)
2
Q
What is the test for sulfates?
A
- Add barium ions to test sample
- Barium will react with sulfate ions to form Barium Sulfate
- Barium Sulfate is a white, powdery precipitate
3
Q
Why add dilute HCL at the start of sulfate test?
A
Remove impurities like carbonates and sulfites
4
Q
What is the positive test for for sulfates?
A
White precipitate forms (barium sulfate)
5
Q
What is the test for halides (chloride, bromide, iodide ions)?
A
- Add dilute nitric acid to test sample
- Add silver nitrate to to sample
- Silver ions will react with halides to form a precipitate
6
Q
Why add nitric acid at the start of halide test?
A
Remove impurities like carbonates and sulfites
7
Q
What is the positive test for bromide ions?
A
Cream precipitate
8
Q
What is the positive test for chloride ions?
A
White precipitate
9
Q
What is the positive test for iodide ions?
A
Yellow precipitate
