Test Of 9/21/17 Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a substance?
Chemical; matter that has a definite and uniform composition
What are CFC’s?
Chlorine, flourine, carbon
How is the ozone formed?
The ozone is formed when UV radiation strikes on an oxygen molecule causing it to split into two free oxygen atoms. The free atoms then collide with molecules of oxygen to form ozone molecules.
What is a model?
A bisual, verbal, or mathematical explanation of experimental data
What is quantitive data
It tells how much, how little, how little, how big, how tall, or how fast
What is qualitative data?
Quality based on the five senses.
What is a hypothesis?
An educated guess
What is a theory
A theory is an explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations and investigations over time.
What is a scientific law?
A relationship in nature that is supported by many experiments
What is an independent variable?
The variable that is changed during the experiment
What is a dependent variable?
Its value changes in response to a change in the independent variable.
What is a control?
A standard for comparison
What is a Conclusion?
A judgement based on the information obtained
What is pure research?
Pure research is to gain knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself.
What is applied research?
Research undertaken to solve a problem
What is the independent and dependent variable in this situation? A teacher asks students how much sleep they got and what test scores they got.
Independent: how much a student sleeps
Dependent: their test scores
What is the control in this situation? A person asks people how much coffee they consume and how it affects their appetite
Someone who drinks no coffee
What are solids?
Solids have a definite shape and volume. They are matter
What are liquids?
Liquids are a form of matter that flows, has a constant volume and takes the shape of its container.
Gases
Form of matter that flows to conform to the shape of its container but also fills the entire volume of it.
Vapor
THe gaseous state of a substance that is normally solid or liquid at room temperature
What is a physical property?
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the sample’s composition
Extensive physical property
Dependent on the amount of substance present (mass)
Intensive physical property
Independent of the amount of substance present
