test on wed 12/16 Flashcards
(33 cards)
what does gravity depend on?
mass of an object
how does distance affect gravity?
further away ➡️ weaker gravity
closer ➡️ stronger gravity
what is free fall?
an object falling under only the influence of gravity
why can we not free fall on earth?
air resistance
what 2 items affect air resistance?
shape and size
what is terminal velocity?
top speed reached by a falling object. air resistance is equal to gravitational pull net force is equal to zero.
draw a picture for the cause of friction
something with a box around 100 n and lines with a circle with some ratchet ass lines and the top one is dark and the bottom half is white as nialls dick
write a full complete sentence for the cause of friction - must include where the push is coming from
friction is caused when the “hills and valleys” catch and snag on each other when two surfaces are pressed together closely -hills and valleys pull on each other
what is fluid friction?
force that tried to stop an object moving through a fluid (like water) or air
what are the 3 ways we can increase friction?
increase mass.
increase push or force.
make surface rougher.
write out newton’s 1st law of motion
an object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion stays in motion of constant speed, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
write out newton’s 2nd law of motion
acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied
write out newton’s 3rd law of motion
every force has an equal and opposite reaction force
define exert
to put fourth, as strength, or make a great effort at something
define vector
quantity that has both size & direction
define magnitude
general word used when asking about how powerful something is, its size
define force
a push or pull
define newton
SI base unit for force
define net force
overall force acting on an object when all of the forces are combined
inertia
how hard it is to change the speed or direction of an object’s motion
define gravity
force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses
define orbit
path an object takes in space as it moves around another object due to gravity
define centripetal force
any force that keeps an object moving in a circle
define weight
force of gravity on an object
