sociology is the study of social problems, it focusing on a group of people. examples would be, study of different types of families, globalism, ethnic groups, drugs, incarceration
psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. psychology focuses on an individual, examples are, behavior of teenagers, mental states, trauma in a child ect

the different groups and the conflicts that they have in society. “The haves and the have nots” the upper class and the common people. In history there has always been a conflict between those groups. For example, Prison guards vs the prisoners, or the rich vs the poor.

A

Not judging a culture, but trying to understand it on its own terms. The appreciation that not all cultures will be the same. We don’t all have to have the same religion, dress the same, speak the same language ect.

What is ethnocentrism?

A

The use of one’s own culture as a yardstick for judging the ways of other individuals or societies, generally leading to a negative evaluation of their values, norms, and behaviors. Ethnocentrism can lead to discrimination against people whose ways differ from ours. They think their culture is the best one. Examples would be, white man culture thought they were better than the Indians, and wanted to make them Christians, dress them different, and have their hair a certain way. Another example would be KKK, and white supremacy. They tend to think other cultures way of life is barbaric.

Tabula rasa theory that we are all born with a blank slate. It is believed that all knowledge comes from experience or perception. The belief that all humans are born with the ability to become literally anything or anyone. An example would be abused kids growing up doing bad things based on how they grew up.

A

cultural belief symbols- cross, fish, star of David
language- different forms of writing symbols. Hieroglyphs, knots, thumbs up, thumbs down.
cultural values- American flag, burning flag, loving family dog and in another culture, they fight dogs for entertainment. What might be beautiful somewhere another society might have a different perception.

people or groups that affect our self-concept, attitudes, behaviors, or other orientations toward

  • family- A lot of what they are rub off on you. What church your parents go to. School they put you in, food you eat, music you listen to, the way you act.
  • Peers- Your friends, peer pressure, teammates, workout together, study partners. They can be a negative or positive influence on your life.
  • Media- Good, bad, misleading, social media posts, news can give false news.

Studying culture by looking at human remains. From the remains they can tell us diet, how they lived, what weapons they used, and how many were killed.
