Q

Testing for alcohol (2 tests including distinguishing types)

A

Add ceric ammonium nitrate, if it changes colour from yellow to red it is an alcohol/Add sodium and if it bubbles H2 it is an alcohol
To test types, oxidise and if carboxylic acid it is 1, if ketone it is 2, if NVR it is 3

16
Q

How to test between Ag+ and Pb2+

A

Add dilute NH3; Ag+ produces a brown ppt, Pb2+ produces a white ppt

17
Q

How to test between Mg2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+

A

Add dilute NH3; Mg2+ produces a white ppt, Cu2+ produces a blue ppt; Fe2+ produces a green ppt; Fe3+ produces a brown ppt
