Textbook Chapter 20 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Phase of matter
Synonym for “states of matter.”
Lake-effect storm
Winter-weather events that result from a combination of atmospheric phenomina and geographic factors.
Latent heat
Energy that is absorbed or released when matter changes state.
Calorie
The energy absorbed when the temperature of 1 gram of water increases 1 Celsius degree.
Specific heat
The energy needed to raise 1 gram of a substance 1 Celsius degree.
Melting
The change from a solid to a liquid.
Vaporization
The change from liquid to gas.
Condensation
The change from a gas to a liquid.
Dew
Moisture that condenses from water vapor in the atmosphere onto cold surfaces.
Freezing
The change from liquid to solid.
Frost
Similar in orion to dew, it is composed of ice crystals that form directly from water vapor in contact with surfaces below 0 degrees Celsius.
Evaporation
The vaporization of water when the temperature is below the boiling point.
Transpiration
When water evaporates from plants, especially from leaves.
Absolute humidity
The mass of water bapor in each cubic unit of air.
Psychrometer
Used to find the dewpoint. It is a form of hygrometer.
Hygrometer
An instrument used to measure humidity.
Cloud
Tiny water droplets too light to fall, that remain suspended in the air.
Condensation nuclei
Tiny particles in the air that provide surfaces for water to condense.
Cloud-base altitude
The height at which rising air begins to form clouds.
