(5 cards)
Summary
Nick is retelling the course of events that had taken place over a year ago
1. Nick moves to New York to become a bond salesman
2. He rents a small house in West Egg (new money), next door to Gatsby’s mansion
3. Nick visits his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her family for dinner in East Egg. He meets Tom Buchanan and Jordan Baker
4. Tom attempts to interest his guests with a book called ‘The Rise of the Coloured Empires’ by a man named Goddard. The book is deeply racist and embraces white-supremacist attitudes
5. Shortly after, Tom gets a phone call and leaves the room. Daisy follows him, and Jordan tells Nick that the call is from Tom’s mistress
6. They continue to have dinner awkwardly, and when Nick leaves, Daisy and Tom suggest that he should pursue a romance with Jordan.
7. When Nick arrives home, he finds Gatsby alone on his lawn, staring at the Long Island Sound. When Nick follows Gatsby’s gaze, he sees a tiny green light blinking at the end of the dock.
